It was very common from the 17th to 19th C, but suffered a decline, like other Biblical names, at the beginning of the present century. It is a name which lends itself naturally to abbreviation, and Ben has at all times been the form of the name in ordinary use. Benny seems to be exclusively Jewish.
Hebrew ‘son of my right hand’. It owes much of its popularity to the lovable nature of the youngest of Joseph’s brethren.
