A male name. Old German Beringaer, Beringer, compound of berin ‘a bear’, gairu ‘a spear’; the name of one of the paladins in the Charlemagne romances. Berengerius occurs in Domesday Book, and it was in fairly common use throughout the 12th and 13th C, usually in the form Berenger, Berengier, but the shortened form Benger occurs as early as 1201. The name died out in general use after the 14th C, but has been used down to the present day in a few families.
