Bethia Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. Hebrew bith-yah ‘daughter (i.e. worshipper) of 'Jehovah’, the name of a d. of Pharaoh and wife of Mered (I Chron. IV). The name appears in the Septuagint as βεθία, in the Vulgate as Bethia, and in Authorized Version of the Bible as Bithiah. It is found in use as a christian name from the 17th C, being most popular in Scotland, possibly from its likeness to the Gaelic Bethoc, a derivative of beath ‘life’.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

BETHIAH, f. Either Hebrew ‘daughter of Jehovah’, which seems a whit too ambitious, or in Celtic, ‘life’. It is American and rural English, the former spelling being the more usual; originally, however, it was an Irish name, imported, about 620, ‘by some of the Keltic missionaries of the North of England, and St. Aidan consecrated her at Whitby as the first nun in Northumbria’ (Yonge).

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

A Celtic name, meaning: Life. Some authorities give this as a form of Elisabeth.
