From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Frankish Bobo, Bovo (cognate with Old English Bobba) became French Beuves (cf. Eudes from Eudo, Ives from Ivo) by the addition of a final s to mark the nominative case, and in England, where the name was introduced at the Norman Conquest, it became Beves or Bevis, and was not uncommon in the 12th and 13th C. The popular romance of Sir Bevis of Hampton no doubt helped to keep it in use. Lyford 1655 gives a characteristically fanciful etymology ‘Beavis, Beautifull, French. as some will have it’. Richard Jefferies’s novel Bevis, the story of a boy (1882) has been responsible for a slight revival of the name.
This, like Beavois, is a Romance form of Anglo-Danish boge, a bow. ‘Its English fame rests upon a champion called Bogo,... supposed to have been Earl of Southampton at the time of the Norman Conquest,’ Yonge. Its place in literature is that obtained by Bevis of Hampton—i. e., Bogo—an early C14 romance in verse, and by Richard Jeffries’s delightful Bevis, 1882.
BEAVIS. Camden derives Beavis from the old name Bellovesus, which he translates ‘pulcher aspectus’ (beautiful countenance); but Bellovesus is more probably from the Celtic bel gwas, youthful warrior.
French (masculine) - Handsome.
A Teutonic name, meaning: A bow used in archery. Incidentally, the name borne by a brave knight of Arthurian romance.
