Blase Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. the etymology is obscure; there was a cognomen Blasio current in the Cornelian gens, and also one Blaesus in the Sempronian gens. Blaesus is Latin blaesus, ‘splay-footed’, ‘deformed’, ‘stuttering’, and Blasio may possibly be cognate with it. The cult of St Blasius, Bishop of Sebaste, martyred in 316, and patron saint of wool-workers, was widely diffused in the Middle Ages, and was naturally popular in England where the wool trade was of so much importance. The only relic of the trade in Romsey, Hants (once a wool staple), is an inn called the Bishop Blaise. Blase or Blaze survived the Reformation and is found occasionally in the 17th C. The French form of the name was Blaise (e.g. Blaise Pascal) and the Spanish Blas (e.g. Gil Blas).
