A male name. Old German Bodoloff, Bodenolf, Bodolev, an uncommon name of doubtful, possibly Slavonic, origin. St Botolf or Botulf (d. 680) is said to have first introduced the Benedictine rule into England, though it did not take root until three centuries later. Boston Lincs is Botulf's stone, and Botolphs Sussex is also named after the saint. It is of rare occurrence as a christian name.
A contraction of Bodvulf or Bodvuolf therefore a variant of Biddulph, q. v. The occasional spelling Botolph appears to be an attempt to make the best of two worlds.
