From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. Sir Edward Conway, 1st Lord Conway, and for some time governor of the Brill in Holland (held by the English 1585-1616), named one of his dd. (b. c. 1600) Brilliana after the seat of his office. She later m., as his 3rd wife, Sir Robert Harley, and her name was used for several generations in the Harley family and spread by marriage into others. It occurs as late as 1844, and may still be in use. Lady Harley’s sister was also given a name, Helegenwach (Dutch = Saints’ lane), commemorative of her father’s service in the Netherlands. She m. Sir W. Smyth of Hill Hall, Essex, and had children, but it is not surprising that her very uneuphonious name should not have been perpetuated as her sister’s more pleasing one was.
