Brunehilda Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

BRUNHILDA. In Ger.—and it is a mainly Ger., especially Norse, name—the word is usually spelt Brynhild(a); literally, it signifies ‘the breast-plate maid of battle’. As Charlotte Yonge so aptly says, ‘A thorough Valkyr was Brynhilda, the maiden whom Odin had touched with his sleep-thorn... Sigurd aroused her, and won her for his own... This is the... origin of our fairy tale of the Sleeping Beauty’. In the more Germanic version, she, ‘like the Greek Atalanta, was only to be won by a champion who could excel her in games of strength, and her conquered suitors were all put to death’. She figures prominently in The Book of Heroes and in the Nibelungenlied.
