Caspar Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Jasper is the usual English form of Gaspar or Caspar, which was the traditional name of one of the Three Kings (Gaspar, Melchior, Balthasar) into whom medieval legend transformed the ‘wise men' who came to Bethlehem to worship the infant Christ. The Gospels say nothing of their number or their names, but the legend evidently arose early. The Three Kings and their names appear in an 11th-C painting. Their supposed remains were translated from Constantinople in the 12th C and were ultimately enshrined at Cologne: Kaspar, in consequence, became a fairly common name in Germany; and Gaspard in France, Gaspar in Spain, Gaspare in Italy were not uncommon. Jasper or Jesper are found in England from the 16th C, and must have been in use much earlier (cf. the surnames Jasper, Jesper), but the name has never been popular in this country. The etymology is unknown; it is probably of Eastern origin. See also Balthasar.
