In C17, often Cœlia, which points to a possible origin in Latin cœla, the heavens. In C17-mid 18 and in C20, often aristocratic; in C19, mainly proletarian and petit bourgeois, this latter prevalence being in part the result of association with Irish Sheelah (Sheila), in part the result of confusion with Cecilia (Yonge). This name was a favourite with C17 poets, both lyric and pastoral. One of the best of Sir Charles Sedley’s ‘songs’ begins thus : Not, Celia, that I juster am, Or better than the rest, For I would change each hour like them, Were not my heart at rest.
