Though from Greek (charma), a (source of) joy; delight, the ch is generally pronounced soft. In England, it appears hardly before C17: cf., in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, that Charmian who was the more attractive of the queen’s two attendants (‘Good sir, give me good fortune’). Etymologically, it may be compared with Charis.
