Cherubin is of course from the H. כּרוּב cherub, pl. כּרוּבים cherubim, the meaning of which is doubtful. According to some it is of Phœnicio-Shemitic origin, and signifies divine steed. Others say the cherubim are the same as the griffins of the γφρυρες Persians, guardians of the gold-producing mountains; from a Persian word signifying to take hold, to take, to hold.
