Christabel Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. the earliest occurrence of this name is in the Middle English romance of Sir Eglamour d’Artois, and it also comes in some versions (e.g. Percy’s) of the Ballad of Sir Cauline. It was doubtless from Percy that Coleridge took it for his own poem. Christable occurs as a christian name in 1561, Christabell in 1604, Christobelle in 1687, Christabel in Cornwall in 1727; Christobella Lady Saye and Sele d. in 1789 act. 94. The etymology is puzzling, but it seems to be a compound of Christus and Latin bella, cf. Dulcibel, Claribel, Rosabel, &c., qq.v. Other examples of the use of Christ in compound names are the Old German (7th-9th C) Cristemia, Cristehildis, Cristemberga. The modern use of the name is probably, as a rule, consciously derived from Coleridge’s poem.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Occasionally CHRISTABELLE. From χριστος; (L. Christusy the Anointed One) and Latin bellus, f. bella, handsome. Christabel dates from ca. 1540 in Yorkshire, but it is now less general than Christina or Christine. To poetry-lovers the name has been endeared by Coleridge’s unfinished poem (1816) thus entitled; it ranks with Kubla Khan and The Ancient Mariner as his greatest work; more-over, its metre was new.

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

Not an uncommon female name. It would seem to be derived from Cristobal, the Spanish form of Christopher.

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Greek (feminine) - Follower of Christ.
