Christmas Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(m. f.) this, like other names of Church festivals, was sometimes given to children born on that day (cf. Pentecost, Easter, &c.) and is found from the 13th C down to at least as late as 1863. It gave rise to a not uncommon surname. It has now been replaced by Noel (q.v.).
Camden thinks this was originally imĀposed as a baptismal name from the bearer thereof having been born on the day of the festival. In like manner in France, says Lower, Noel was first a Christian, afterwards a family name.
