A male name. French, from Latin Claudius, the name of two famous Roman gentes, one patrician, the other plebeian, probably a derivative of claudus 'lame'. Claude has long been used in France, and it was adopted in the 16th C by the Hamilton family, who had French connexions, the first to bear the name being Lord Claud Hamilton (b. 1543), Baron Paisley and ancestor of the Earls and Dukes of Abercorn, since whose time it has been used continuously in his family.
