A male name. Latin clemens, clementis, ‘mild’, ‘merciful’, the name of a saint, the first of the Apostolic Fathers and a disciple of St Paul, and of many subsequent popes. St Clement has over 40 church dedications in this country, and his name was a favourite one from the end of the 12th C until the Reformation; C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives some 15 surnames derived from it, including Clement, Clements, Clemens, Clemson. The Tractarians revived the name in the 19th C, with reference rather to Clement of Alexandria than to the Pope.
