Cleopatra Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

In Greek, it means ‘glory, fame of (one’s) father’. Cleopatra, who died in B. C. 30 at the age of 39, was the last of the Ptolemies in Egypt, which, on her death, became a Roman province. Beautiful, charming, and wise (‘serpent of old Nile’), she figures in English literature less because of her early love-affair with Caesar (G. B. Shaw, Caesar and Cleopatra) than because of her mature one with Antony—commemorated by Shakespeare, by Dryden (All for Love—the finest Restoration tragedy), by Daniel (in a tragedy, 1594, in the Senecan manner); see also Rider Haggard’s Cleopatra, 1889, as well as Jack Lindsay’s historical novel, Last Days with Cleopatra, 1935. The name is now seldom bestowed among English-speaking people, though it is fairly common in Russia—or used to be. (Yonge; Harvey.)

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

Found as a female name in the parish registers of Nottingham. So called from Κλεοπάτρα, queen of Egypt; also the name of many other celebrated women. It is derived from κλεο, glory, renown, fame, and πατρα, one’s native country, a family. Dr. Pape considers the name equivalent to Adelberta, which he translates ‘die durch ihre Geburt oder ihren Vater glänzende.’

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Greek (feminine) - A father’s or a country’s glory.
