A female name. French diminutive of Nicole, now chiefly known in this country as the pen-name of a contemporary French novelist, but formerly not uncommon in England. It was latinized as Coleta or Colecta, and gave rise to the surnames Colet, Collett, Collect. Promptorium Parvulorum gives Colette as the English and Colecta as the Latin fo rm, and Coleta is found as late as 1513. It was the name of the 15th-C reformer of the Poor Clares, who helped to end the Great Schism of the West.
