A male name. Probably derived from the OCelt root *Kuno-, ‘high’. Traditionally the name of one of the early British Bishops of London, and later of several Celtic saints. One of them, Conan or Kynan Meriadech, was said to have led a band of fugitive Britons to Armorica and to have been the ancestor of the Dukes of Brittany. The name still survives in Brittany, and it was brought to England by Bretons after the Norman Conquest, and became a fairly common christian name from the 12th C to 16th C, giving rise to the surnames Conan, Conant, Connant, Connand, Conning, Connon.
