Constantine Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Latin derivative of constans ‘constant’, 'firm'. As the name of the first Christian Emperor, Constantine was early adopted as a christian name. Constantine, a Cornish saint, was said to have evangelized Scotland in the 6th C, and his name was borne by Constantine MacFergus (d. 820), King of the Picts, and by three early (9th and 10th C) Scottish kings. There is one sub-tenant of the name in Domesday Book, and it was not uncommon in England as well as Scotland from the 12th to the 17th C, giving rise to the surnames Costin, Costain, Considine, Constantine, &c. Costin was the usual English form of the name in the Middle Ages and until the 17th C. It was particularly common in Devon and Cornwall.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

M. From Latin Constantinus, originally a diminutive of Constantius, itself from constans, ‘standing together,’ hence ‘constant, firm’. Its use in England is probably the direct result of the fame of Constantine the Great, who, in 313, gave Christians full citizenship in the Roman empire. Cf. the preceding trio of names.
