A female name. when used to-day, this name is probably always taken from Shakespeare’s play King Lear. Shakespeare took (and slightly altered) the name from Holinshed where it appears as Cordeilla. It may be the same as Cordula which appears in Welsh and Cornish calendars as the name of one of the companions of St Ursula, and is found in German as Kordula or Kordel. A Cordelia Parker died in 1689 in Cornwall, and several examples of the name have been noted in Lancashire in the second half of the 17th C.
In Celtic, ‘token of the flowing tide’ or ‘daughter of the sea’: Creiryddlydd, Shakespeare’s Cordelia, is the daughter of Llyr (Lear), ‘the sea’; the modern form may be due to German influence, for in the German it is Kordula. ‘Cordelia is hereditary in some Irish families; but it is chiefly used for love of Shakespeare’s heroine of filial love’ (Yonge): cf. Imogen.
