A female name. Greek the name of a Boeotian woman poet, possibly a derivative of κόρη ‘a maiden’. It was used in 17th- and 18th-C poetry, notably by Herrick, and has sometimes also been used as a christian name. The French use Corinne more often, probably on account of Mme de Staël’s novel of the name.
From the Greek f. Christian name, presumably a diminutive of koré (see at Cora). English use—now verging on disuse—was very general in C17, especially among the lyric and pastoral poets. Sir George Etherege (in Southerne’s The Disappointment) sings thus : See how fair Corinna lies, Kindly calling with her eyes; In the tender minute prove her; Shepherd! why so dull a lover? Prithee, why so dull a lover?
