F.; CORNELIUS, m. The Corn- may be Latin cornu, a horn, and therefore indicative of kingliness, a horn being the symbol of kingship; the -elia, -elius element is obscure. In England, both these names verge on obsolescence; in the U. S. A., merely on comparative and perhaps increasing rarity: but their history is important. The Cornelian ‘gens’ (or clan) of Rome numbered many famous men and hardly less famous women, for Cornelia the mother of those two Republican trouble-makers the Gracchi had a firmer character than either of the two rather rash young men; of this ‘gens’ were the notable families of Sylla and Scipio; in addition to a rather obscure St. Cornelia, there were at least three SS. Cornelius, one of whom was a Pope of C3.
