In C19 rather fashionable, in C20 tending to go below-stairs, this f. name, deriving from the Greek, means a bay-tree: which etymology reminds the romantic that mythological Daphne, pursued by amorous Apollo, was by the gods, on her supplication, transformed into this tree, henceforth Apollo’s favourite.
Found as a female name. So called after Daphne, a daughter of the river Peneus, or of the Ladon, by the goddess Terra. Apollo, being enamoured of her, pursued her, and Daphne, afraid of being caught, entreated the aid of the gods, who changed her into a laurel (Gr. δαφνη, the laurel or bay-tree).
