Like Dermot, is the commonly employed variant of the Irish Diarmid or Diarmaid, a freeman. As to ‘Darby and Joan’, it was ‘first used of attached old couple in song in The Gentleman’s Magazine (1735), perhaps characters from real life’ (Weekley).
