A Celtic name (lit. ‘a freeman’) frequently heard in both Ireland and Scotland. (See also the next.) It figures prominently in legend—but not in Macpherson’s Ossian—and in history. Diarmaid, King of Leinster, ‘acted the part of Paris, and ruined his country by the abduction of Devorgil of Meath’ (Yonge).
