From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. this apparently goes back to the medieval romance of Sir Degore or Degarre, though the earliest example I have been able to find is Degory s. of Degory and Pentecost Keast 1712, a Cornishman. Goldsmith used Diggory as the name of a serving-man in She Sloops to Conquer (1773). It seems to be mainly Cornish. The explanation of the name given in the romance is that the hero as a child was found by a hermit and christened Degarre because Degarre nowt elles ne is But thing that not neuer what hit is other thing that is negʒ forlorn also.
It is presumably derived from French égaré, ‘strayed’, ‘lost’, though it is not clear how; possibly the s of the reflexive form may have been mistaken for a d.
Says Charlotte Yonge, ‘is a highly romantic name, derived from an old French metrical tale of a knight, properly called D’Egaré, the wanderer, or the almost lost, one of the many versions of the story of the father and unknown son. ‘
