Dulcie Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. this seems to be a modern invention, not directly connected with the medieval Dowsabel (Latin Dulcibella), but farmed immediately from the Latin dulcis ‘sweet’. Dowsabel or Dowse (French Douce) was common in the Middle Ages, and gave rise to the surnames Dous, Dowse, Dowson, Duce, Dewse, and also Dowsett and Dowsing from the diminutive Douset and Dousin. The name was latinized as Dulcia. Dowsabel was still common in the 16th C, sometimes appearing as Dowzable, Dussabel, &c., and it was also used as a generic name for a sweetheart. Camden 1605 gives Douze and Dousabel. In the 18th C the Latin form Dulcibella was sometimes used, but Charlotte Mary Yonge, History of ChristianNames, 2 vols. 1863. Revised ed. 1884 seems to regard it and Dowse as obsolete. Dulcibella was formed in the same way as Christabella, Mirabella, &c., qq.v.

Dussabele, Duszabell Writs of Parliament c. 1300. Duce, Douce Hundred Rolls 1273.
