A male name. Old English, compound of dun ‘hill’, and stan ‘stone’, the name of the great Archbishop of Canterbury, Dunstan s. of Heorstan 924-88. His memory was held in great reverence in the Middle Ages and his name is occasionally found in use; a Donston Chechelly occurs in London as late as 1529, probably named after the parish of his birth. The name went out of use after the Reformation until it was revived by the Tractarians in the 19th C.
