An A. -S. name equivalent to ‘hill-stone’, presumably in reference to physical strength or moral firmness. The name, now rather uncommon, was popularised by the fame of the Dunstan who, after a turbulent love-affair, became a monk at Glastonbury and soon its abbot,—in 960 (aged 35), prime minister and Archbishop of Canterbury until his death (988) after a wise ministry and vigorous reform. (Dawson.)

Some derive this name from a locality signifying ‘the stone hill’ or ‘the strong fortress’ (dun-stan), but the Saxon compound is no doubt used figuratively.
