Found as a male name. From the Scrip­ture name אֱלְקָנָה Elkanáh, which St. Jerome translates ‘possession of God, whom God has redeemed;’ Gesenius, ‘whom God created;’ and Tregelles, ‘whom God possessed.’ The most probable derivation is that of St. Jerome, viz. from El God, and kanáh to possess.
