A female name. Old French Ameline, Emeline, apparently formed from the common element Amal- (see Amelia) with the diminutive suffix -ine. It was introduced into England by the Normans; one of the dd. of Aimeri, Vicomte de Thouars, who accompanied the Conqueror to England, was named Ameline. It was common throughout the Middle Ages in the forms Emlin, Emblin, and later Emblem, and gave rise to various surnames. Emblen and Imblen occur in the 16th and 17th C, Emlyn in the 17th, and in Chichester Cathedral there is a memorial to Emblem Miller, d. 1718 aet. 17. The full form Emmeline was revived in the 18th C.
