From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. a Welsh name which has been tentatively identified with Welsh enit ‘a woodlark’. It came into use in England after the publication of Tennyson’s ‘Geraint and Enid’ in the Idylls of the King (1859). It is commonly pronounced Ēnid in England, but the Welsh pronunciation is Ĕnid.
This is one of those names which entail on its owner a very grave responsibility, for in the Celtic it means ‘spotless purity’. In Arthurian romance, Enid was the (metaphorical) torch-bearer of virtuous and noble womanhood. ‘In the Middle Ages no higher praise could be bestowed on a woman than to be called “a second Enid”,’ Helena Swan: in the present century, a self-respecting woman would face-slap a husband who offered to treat her as Tennyson’s Geraint did Enid in the Idyll bearing their names. (Geraint I had imagined to be long dead and buried: and yet you will see the name attached to a contributor to Lovat Dickson’s Magazine, February, 1935.)
Another form of Enaid.
A Anglo-Saxon name, meaning: The fair. (Celtic) The soul.
