A male name. Hebrew ‘teacher’, ‘tuition’, the dame of a patriarch, father of Methusalem. It came into use as a christian name in the 17th C.
In Hebrew, ‘dedicated’ (to God). In the Bible, Enoch, father of Methuselah, had himself attained the not inconsiderable age of 365 when a possible record was spoilt by his translation to heaven; he was the sixth in descent from Adam. Tennyson’s Enoch Arden, published in 1864, tells a noble story of self-sacrifice, and may thus have done something to perpetuate the name, which is now rarely found outside of rural districts. The sub-title of H. A. Vachell’s Vicar’s Walk (1933) runs thus: ‘A chronicle of certain adventures and misadventures, traffics and excursions, in the life of Enoch Saint, chorister, soldier, and dean’s verger’ (in the ancient town of Wells).
A baptismal name common in Worcestershire, derived, through the Gr.’Ενωχ; from the Scripture name חֲנוֹך, Hhanókh, which Simonis renders ‘initiated, dedicated —that is, to God and St. Jerome, ‘dedicated’ simply.
