From Where Does The Surname Originate? ^{meaning and history}

A male name. Old Norse Eyrekr, Modern Norse Eirik, German Erich, the second element is the common Teutonic root meaning 'rule’, ‘government’, the first is doubtful. The name was brought to England by the Danes; there is one tenant named Iricus in Domesday Book but it seems to have soon died out. its revival in the 19th C was helped by Dean Farrar’s immensely popular school-story, Eric: or Little by Little (1858), and it is now a fairly common name.

Literally, ‘ever king,’ its early—its Norwegian—form was Eirik, the ei being aye (as in ever and aye); ric is the rich of Old Ger., ryce of A. -S., and rex of Latin ‘Our adjective rich is its sordid offspring, and in France a wealthy peasant is un richart’ (Yonge), though in C20 un richard is any rich vulgarian. The name was debased by Dean Farrar in Eric, or Little by Little, which the present writer, name-lured, read at the pleasantly mature age of seven; it was more nobly used by Sir Henry Rider Haggard in that stirring ‘juvenile’, Eric Brighteyes. By ‘Johns’ and ‘Toms’ and ‘Dons’, it is often, as I discovered at school, considered pretty-pretty. Diminutived as Ricky or even Rex.
