Förstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch gives examples of names compounded with the cognate Old German anst). It was a rare name and died out in the 14th C. The modern use of Esmond as a christian name is no doubt due to the influence of Thackeray’s novel The History of Henry Esmond (1852). Estmund, Estmond Hundred Rolls 1273.
