From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Old English Eadgar, compound of ead ‘rich’, ‘happy’, and gar ‘a spear'. The first element was a distinguishing mark of the royal house of Wessex. Eadgar (944—75), the grandson of Alfred, was one of the most successful kings of that house; his name became a favourite among the English and survived the Norman Conquest. It was used, though infrequently, until about the end of the 13th C. It was revived in the 18th C, along with other Old English names, by romantic writers, but the reason for its greatly increased use in the 19th C was probably that it was the name of the hero of The Bride of Lammermoor (1819).
