A male name. compound of Old English æthel ‘noble', beorht ‘bright’, the name of the King of Kent (560-616) who was converted to Christianity by St Augustine, and also of a king of England (855-65), brother of Alfred the Great. It is doubtful if it survived the Norman Conquest (but see further under Albert), and if it did, it was only for a short time.

A male name. compound of Old English æthel ‘noble', beorht ‘bright’, the name of the King of Kent (560-616) who was converted to Christianity by St Augustine, and also of a king of England (855-65), brother of Alfred the Great. It is doubtful if it survived the Norman Conquest (but see further under Albert), and if it did, it was only for a short time. A solitary example occurs at Cambridge in 1564. It was revived in the middle of the 19th C, an early example being Ethelbert (Bertie) Stanhope in Barchester Towers (1857).

‘Æthelbryht, or Noble Splendour, named our first Christian king of Kent, also a brother of King Alfred’s, and a missionary of the royal blood of Northumbria, who preached in southern Germany, and died about the year 700, at Egmond, where, as St. Adelbrecht, he became patron,’Yonge. Now rare.
