A male name. from Greek εύύσεβής ‘pious’; a common Greek name, the best known example being Eusebius of Caesarea (c. a.d. 264—c. 349), the ecclesiastical historian. It was probably after him that the name was used in the 17th C, e.g. Eusebius Hunt (Hunts Clergy List 1696), Euseby Pelsant 1642. English Register of Godstow Nunnery, c. 1450 (E.E.T.S. 129-30) 1450 gives Euseby as the English form of Eusebius, but there is no evidence of its use as a christian name at that date.
