The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

F. In neither ‘Yonge’ nor ‘Swan’, this name, which is that of the most important woman in Beaumont and Fletcher’s The Maid’s tragedy, 1619, recurs in The Fortunes of Evadne, a novel by Dorothea Conyers. Rather fanciful, it is also unusual—and, because of its trisyllabic pronunciation, avoided by the illiterate. ‘Tis Evadne (ē-vád-nē), the wife of Caponeus, one of ‘the seven against Thebes’ (as in the play by Aeschylus), who leapt into the flames that were consuming her husband’s body, to be herself consumed. Most of’em remain widows for quite six months.
