From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. Old German Avelina, a hypocoristic form of Avi (cf. the m. name Avila). The Normans introduced Aveline into England and it was common in the 12th and 13th C, giving rise to the surnames Aveling, Eveling, Evelyn, Eveline, &c. Aveline was still used as a christian name in the 17th C and Avaline is found as late as 1829 in New England. The Latin form of the name, Evelina, was revived by Fanny Burney for the heroine of her novel of that name (1778), and has been used from that time onwards. The shorter Evelyn, which is now commoner than Evelina, and is usually pronounced Ēvelyn, has apparently come into being through association with the m. name Evelyn (q.v.).

A male name. as a man’s name this seems to date only from the 17th C and to be derived from the surname Evelyn. The two earliest recorded examples are Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston (1665-1726), and Sir Evelyn Alston d. 1750. Both their mothers were Evelyns by birth. The surname probably originated in the christian name Aveline (see Evelina).
Originally m. and from the Celtic for ‘pleasant’, it has, in C19-20, been used for both sexes; for the f., both Eveleen and Eveline (qq. v.) are indubitably preferable, except when Evelyn is meant to represent the surname Evelyn (‘the old French form of the Latin avellana, a hazel’, Yonge.)
