A male name. Old German Eburhard, Mod German Eberhard, compound of ebur ‘a boar’ and hardu ‘hard’, cognate with Old English Eoforheard. It was introduced into England by the Normans in the French form Everard and was fairly common in the 12th and 13th C, giving rise to the surnames Everard, Everit, Everitt, Everett, &c. It has continued in occasioned use ever since, notably in the Digby family.
