Fabianus Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Latin Fabianus ‘of Fabius’ (the name of a Roman gens). Fabius may be derived from faba ‘a bean’, but this etymology is not certain. There was a 3rd-C Pope Fabian who was beatified and he is no doubt responsible for the survival of the name. C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives many examples of Fabian as a christian name in the 16th C the earliest being in Cocke Lorelle’s Bote 1515, but was unable to find anything earlier, though the existence of the surnames Fabian, Fabyan made it certain that the name was in use some centuries before. Fabianus does, however, occur as the name of a sub-prior of St Albans c. 1200 and in a Curia Regis Roll of 1220.
