A male name. Latin felix ‘happy'. The name of four popes and several saints, notably St Felix the apostle of East Anglia, after whom Felixstowe was named. It was used in England in the Middle Ages, but not so often as the f. form (see Felicia). It appears as Felis in the chansons de geste, and Felyse is given as the English form of Felix in English Register of Godstow Nunnery, c. 1450 (E.E.T.S. 129-30) 1450. Felix has been commonly used in Ireland to represent the Irish Phelim.

Direct from Latin felix, ‘happy’ or ‘fortunate’. Common to Britain, France, Spain and Russia, it is a name particularly significant in the annals of the Church, especially the Roman Catholic: Felix was that Roman governor of Judea before whom St. Paul was arraigned; four Popes and one anti-Pope were thus named; and there are some sixty-five other saints bearing this name (Benedictines). Two Phelim O’Neills, who changed Phelim (q. v.) to Felix, have been styled infelix Felix, ‘unhappy’ or ‘unlucky Felix’ (Yonge).
