FENELLA. In Celtic, ‘she of the white shoulders’, and thus connected with Finn or Fion, ‘the grand centre of ancient Gaelic giant lore.’ The ancient Fionn-ghuala (‘white shoulder’) naturally became Finnuala, for that is how the ‘tough-looking name’ is pronounced; whence Fenella or Finella. ‘ In the clouds at the opening of Scottish history, we find Fynbella, or Finella, recorded as the cruel Lady of Fettercairn, who, in 994, killed King Kenneth III’ (Yonge).
