In Celtic, it is ‘white stranger’; cf. Dhugal, ‘black stranger’: both were originally epithets of racial designation. Among the compounds of Finn—see Finella—is the Swedes’ Finneaard, ‘which their pronunciation contrives to make sound like Fingal, with what is called the “thick l”; and in modern times it is so spelt in allusion to Macpherson’s hero’ (Yonge). The legendary Scots-Irish bard for whom Mac-pherson acted in 1765 as ‘mouthpiece’ is reputed to have nourished ca. 300 A. D.; whence Fingal’s Cave.
