A male name. (Latin Fredericus, German Friedrich, Fritz, French Frédéric, Italian Federigo)Old German Frithuric, compound of frithu ‘peace’ and ricja ‘rule’. There was a corresponding, rather rare, Old English name Freodhoric which is probably behind the Fredericus who appears in Domesday Book as a tenant Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). The medieval French form Frery or Ferry is occasionally found in the 12th C, but there is little trace of the name from the end of the 12th C until the 17th C. Camden 1605 says: ‘For Frideric the English have commonly used Frery and Fery which hath been now a long time a christian name in the ancient family of Tilney, and lucky to their house as they report.’ The real acclimatization dates from the 18th C, when the Hanoverians brought it in, e.g. Frederick Prince of Wales, s. of George II. It very soon gained a firm footing and has for some 200 years been one of the commonest English men’s names. It is usually shortened, in use, to Fred or Freddy.
Charlotte Yonge’s account of Frey, Frederick and other Frey-derivations, is excellent, while Helena Swan’s treatment of the Teutonic ‘peace-ruler’ is so suitable to brevity that I feel it were an impertinence to paraphrase or gut Italian ‘This name is of very ancient descent, and, coming as it originally did from the Sanskrit, has had a... chequered history. Its immediate ancestors were Freyer and Freya, a god and goddess of Norse mythology, worshipped by the... inhabitants of Germany and Scandinavia. Freya was believed to be the wife of Odin, or Wodan, and the mother of those seven sons who were said to have founded the Anglo-Saxon kingdom. From the days of Frederick Barbarossa,’ Emperor of Germany, 1152—90, ‘the name has been common there. In England it was much less met with until modern times, though it does occur in Domesday Book once. Freodhoric was the original’ m., and the A. -S. f. names ‘were Frithswith and Frides-wide’.
The same as the Old German names Friderich, Fridorich, Fridurih. Junius translates the two latter ‘rich or powerful in peace.’ The more probable etymology is from frid-reich, powerful protector.
