A male name. Old German Filibert, compound of filu ‘much’ and beraht ' bright’. St Filibert or Philibert was the 7th-C founder of the Abbey of Jumièges, and the name was introduced into England by the Normans in the forms Filbert, Fulbert. It gave rise to the surnames Filbert, Philbert, Philibert, and also to the name of the filbert nut, so called because it ripened about the time of St Philibert’s day (22 Aug. OS). Fulbert is given as a christian name by Lyford 1655, and is still used in a few families.
