A male name. (Italian Gabriele, Russian Gavril) Hebrew ‘God is mighty’, the name of the Archangel of the Annunciation. It was never a common christian name, but occurs from time to time, sometimes in the form Gabel or Gabell, from the 12th C and has never quite died out. There are very few churches dedicated to the archangel, but it was a common dedication for bells, the angelus being rung on the Gabriel or Angelus bell.
