Gerardus Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Gairhard, compound of gairu ‘spear' and hardu ‘hard’. Probably introduced into England by the Normans shortly before the Conquest (Girardus and Gerardus occur several times in Domesday Book), Gerard soon became a common name and remained so for several centuries. It gave rise to many surnames, e.g. Garrard, Garrett, Garrod, Jerrard, &c. Garrard and Garet represent the usual Middle English pronunciation of the name (cf. Barnard and Barnet for Bernard), and Garret is given as a christian name by Camden 1605 and Lyford 1655; the latter seems to regard it as an independent name and confuses Gerald and Gerard. Gerard is not now much used and Garret is obsolete.
